What is CAN Bus?

Modern vehicles use a CAN Bus to transfer information between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and various electronic automotive systems. This high-speed communication network can provide a wide range of real-time on-board diagnostic data that can be used to reduce vehicle running costs, improve driver safety, streamline maintenance processes and support environmental responsibility.

Keep vehicle factory warranties intact with CANtouch

CANTouch is manufactured in-house and enables fleet operators to extract CAN Bus data from HGVs, vans and cars without the risk of invalidating the manufacturer’s warranties. Unlike other systems in the marketplace, this innovative solution is able to capture the CAN-Bus protocol data by clipping onto the standard CAN-L and CAN-H wires without breaking the rubber sleeving. No soldering that can invalidate a manufacturer’s warranty required.

Furthermore, the solution does not need to access an FMS (Fleet Management Standard) Gateway that is currently only available on a small percentage of commercial vehicles and can cost as much as £1,200 to retrofit.

CAN Bus Reporting

Access to CAN Bus data enables fleet operators to report on a wide range of information including to effectively identify areas of improvement within their vehicle operation to drive down overheads and minimise environmental impact.

CAN message data that can be tracked includes:

  • Fuel consumption (KPL/MPG)
  • Engine speeds in revolutions per minute (RPM)
  • Speedometer readings (ODO)
  • Throttle position
  • Engine load
  • Fuel levels
  • Engine temperature

The benefits of Inseego's CAN bus integration

  • Provides actual MPG from the vehicle which can be read remotely, removing the need for manual calibration and reporting
  • Additional operational information can be added to detailed vehicle and fleet reports
  • Record mileage, average mileage, RPM and speed for a journey
  • Focus your drivers on cutting fuel consumption and reducting of CO2 emissions

Frequently asked questions

What does CAN mean?

CAN stands for Controller Area Network and is the standard for a serial data bus that connects electronic control units in vehicles. In electronics, a bus is simply a device that connects multiple electrical or electronic devices together. The CAN in vehicles operates in serial, so data is transmitted to all devices in the CAN regardless of it’s intended recipient

How does the CAN bus system work?

CAN is a linear bus system used to transfer digital signals from one device or microcontroller in a vehicle (CAN node) to another. The bus consists of twisted-pair copper wires, CAN-High and CAN-Low, which are connected to each other by terminating resistors. Data is transmitted in data frames, which consists of an identifier that represents message priority, and up to eight bytes of data. Arbitration across the CAN-Bus network allows higher priority data transmissions to be sent and received quickly.

What is a CAN bus connector?

Each CAN node consists of a CPU or microcontroller, CAN controller, and a CAN transceiver, which adapts the signal levels of both data sent and received by the node.

Standardisation of CANbus connectors makes it easier to build tracking devices that can ‘listen in’ to CAN data transmissions and integrate that into vehicle tracking software.

What are the advantages of a CAN bus integration?

Easier to install
No complex wiring is required as everything runs through the two-wire clip-on installation.

Flexibility
New tracking devices and components can be added easily.

Centralized
Everything takes place within one CAN network.

Speed
Data rates across the CAN bus network is much faster than traditional cabling because multiple messages can be sent simultaneously to all connected devices, sensors or actuators. High speed data rates means faster error detection in your fleet tracking solution.

Efficiency
Data is automatically prioritised across the CAN.

Stability
CAN bus systems are robust, shielded from electrical or electromagnetic disturbances.

Economical
Lower hardware costs and minimal signal processing requirements make implementation of tracking devices easier.
